Antarctica 2009

In October/November 2009, the old bull is back in business... while the young bull is having good time in tropical seas... Life is unfair!

Didier Noirot has left Europe to reach McMurdo, one of the American polar base in Antarctica. This is for a shoot, for the new forthcoming series "Frozen Planet" A team of 5 will be deployed in a remote area near Cape Washington, a few hundred miles north of McMurdo Polar Base.

The subject will be to film a colony of Penguins in this northern part of the Ross Sea.

The Happy Campers

Before going to the deep field, in a remote place like Cape Washington, you have to go on a survival course for two days on the ice... just to know what will be the conditions during the next month. Let's see how the happy campers got along...

Tea's ready (almost)

But while some are busy at the kitchen, others dig their sleeping lair...

But day time is not without danger. Cameraman Justin Maguire has often fallen into crevasses, but always survived. Some youngsters now face the danger...

Film Director Chadden Hunter has fallen into a crevasse (but will survive too!)

After a successful training, the team is ready to go. On November 2nd, the equipment is loaded and the team is waiting for good weather conditions to fly to Cape Washington...

SUBImagery team Exploring the Okavango Delta underwater

In July the SUBImagery team joined forces with the Foster Brothers to explore the underwater world of the Okavango Delta. Despite record flood levels, the filming expedition was extremely fruitful, laying the foundation for another trip back next year to continue the work.

Filming Humpback Whales in French Polynesia

Strong wind and big swell hit the coast of the Australes Islands in Polynesia. These islands are not the Polynesia seen on the nice postcards. The swell can reach 5 meters in height or more. But never mind the difficulties to approach them, this is one of the places the humpback whales will choose in the Southern Pacific, to rest in winter, to give birth or (and) to mate. Diving with whales, beside being the most wonderful experience for a diver, is a gift from Nature, a unique invitation to be close to the giants of the sea.

Didier Noirot shoots BMW commercial for Greg Gray.

Image: Rob Malpage

Less fuel, more performance. The message captured by Director Greg Gray with his latest breath taking spot.

"Diver" was shot on location, underwater in Dahab, Egypt in the depths of the Red Sea and is a recreation of the World free diving record holder, Guillaume Nery’s most recent dive to the World record depth of 113 metres. The expertise of Rob Malpage as DOP, a certified deep diver himself and the assistance of French cameraman Didier Noirot proved to be invaluable to the crew.

Noirot’s extensive experience filming documentaries for oceanographer Jacques Cousteau as well as providing the technical know how and the cameras to film at great depths proved to be the catalyst for a great production.

Up the pole off Port St Johns...

Roger%20Horrocks%20Sardine%20Run.jpg After the savage rain that lashed the Natal coast over the last few days, we knew that the massive rivers in this area would be disgorging brown river water and debris into the ocean, making underwater filming unlikely. Ten kilometeres out to sea we dived to test the water conditions and discovered the clean water at 13 meters. Its going to take some time for this to overcome the river water, so we must sit tight and be patient. A further hazard after such flooding is debris such as this tree - hit that in your boat and there will be trouble.
